Here is a list of movies that I found good and that I would like to share with you guys:
Theme = Social/Political (Note: Many of these movies do not have a happy ending, yet not excluding the fact that they are brilliant movies)
-Schindler's List: I watched this movie a couple of years ago, during my history course at school on World War II. It is considered to be Steven Spielberg's most powerful film, and I fully agree with that statement. It shows the struggle of one rich German business man, who tries to save the lives of thousands of Jewish people, working in concentration camps. The movie has shocking scenes, giving a better sense of the reality behind it. It is surely a brilliant and touching movie, which I would reccommend.
-Hotel Rwanda: A movie very similar to Schindler's List, showing a similar struggle of a rich Rwandian Hotel chairman, to try and save many of his people from the atrocities of the civil war in Rwanda. It is considered, by the Movie Database website www.imdb.com, "Shaming and Compelling" for the reasons shown in the movie. Another great movie which I enjoyed.
-Crash: Movie from 2004 talking about the racial discrimination issues in contemporary USA. The movie, in my opinion, has a very good strategic way of showing the variation of discrimination and how it affects each person's life. Great directing and acting, and a powerful topic put forward with intelligence, reflecting today's reality like no other racial/discrimination film has done before.
- The Downfall (Der Untergang): Movie showing the final hours of Adolf Hitler, dictator of the German Third Reich, in his bunker in Berlin, while the city suffered heavy attacks from the Soviet Army. A very impressive movie, spectacular (almost frightening) acting, very realistic. Not much to say about this movie, as people are usually uncomfortable when talking about dictators, but I have to credit the extraordinary cinematic achievement to recreate such an event on film, with an unbelievable touch of reality. Very good movie.
-American History X: For me, this one is probably the best movie on this list for various reasons. It is extremely shocking yet very realistic, very touching and the directing and acting are superb. Based on the issue of racism taken to an extreme point, depicted by a constant conflict between a White Power Skinhead gang and a black gang, this movie can be considered as an attempt to open the eyes of all the people involved in the issue, telling them how horrible and pointless it is. Using a quote from the movie itself, "Life is too short to be pissed off all the time..", we can say that no matter if you are white, black, asian, we all have the same fate. The story shows us the events that lead a former skinhead into realizing how horrible and pointless his anger towards other races was and how he tries to save his little brother from the same fate..
Excellent movie, definitely my favourite from this category, I fully reccomend it. (Note: Holds extremely shocking scenes)
